General information:-

Rice is one of the major crops of Punjab, occupying an area of 2.5 Mha. It is mostly combine harvested, and thestraw left in the field is a major obstacle for subsequent farm operations. Incorporation of straw in the field requires6-7 operations which involves high cost and is highly time consuming. Hence farmers resort to burning of the straw,which is not an environmentally benign operation and results in the loss of organic matter. PAU, Ludhiana centredeveloped a tractor operated straw chopper cum spreading machine in association with a manufacturer foreffective straw management in the field. In a single operation, the stubbles left after combining are chopped into tiny pieces and spread on the field.

Traditional Practices:-

In Punjab, 78-80% area under rice is machine harvested and 19.6 million tones is disposed of by burning every year. For burning purpose, the farmers operate stubble shaver to spread the rice stubbles after combine harvesting of rice. The stubbles are burnt after 3-4 days. It causes atmospheric pollution with great loss of rich organic matter.

The commonly used equipment (offset disc harrow, rotavator) is unable to work in straw laden field conditions. The expenditure of incorporation using these common equipment amounts to Rs 2,500/ha.

Machine information:-

Paddy Straw Chopper (Trailed) is a tractor PTO operator and Trailed type machine. It consists of a cutter bar, reel, feeding auger, beater, and two bruising drums with baffle plates. Reel consists of five tubular type bars. Front bruising drums consist of 12 bars fitted on its periphery at equal spacing. Eighteen serrated blades are fixed on each bar at a spacing of 75 mm with the help of nuts and bolts. Rear bruising drums consist of 6 bars fitted on its periphery at equal spacing. Eighteen serrated blades are fixed on each bar at a spacing of 75 mm with the help of nuts and bolts. Front baffle plates has three bars fitted below front bruising drum. fitted on two bars at a spacing of 75 mm and thirty six serrated blades are fitted on one bar at a spacing of 42 & 30mm alternately with the help of nut and bolts. Rear baffle plates has one bar fitted below rear bruising drum. Thirty six serrated blades are fitted on bar at a spacing of 42 & 30mm alternately with the help of nut and bolts. Power from PTO is transmitted to cutter bar, reel, feeding auger, beater, bruising drum through belts & pulleys and chain & sprockets.

Working of Paddy straw chopper:-

Operated by tractor PTO Paddy Straw Chopper (Trailed) has cutter bar reel, feeding auger and bruising cylinder like a traditional thrasher. Straw throw bar and stubble le􀅌 by the grain combine is collected by straw combine and delivered to the cylinder concave section, where it is cut into pieces and passed through the concave. A reciprocating cutter bar is used for reaping the standing stubbles and the portion of the straw left uncut by the combine harvester. The tynes fixed on the reel pipes push the straw of paddy crop left  after combine operation toward the oscillating cutter bar after which the harvest straw reaches the thrashing drum after passing auger and guide drum. The paddy straw gets crushed in very small pieces in the threshing unit. After that the crushed pieces are spread in the field. Protect against  Flying Debris:-

Always wear proper safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield when driving pins in or out, or when any operation causes dust, flying debris, or any other hazardous material.

  • Do not operate equipment until you are completely trained by a qualified operator in how to use the controls, know its capabilities, dimensions, and all safety requirements.
  • Never allow anyone to climb onto or ride on the machine.
  • Do not allow anyone to remain between the tractor and the unit while it is being coupled or uncoupled.
  • Before exiting the prime mover, lower the attachment to the ground, apply the brakes turn off the prime mover’s engine, and remove the key
  • Do not use mobile while working on the machine, it can be cause major accident.
  • Stones and other debris projected by the moving parts can travel a long distance. Always stay at a safe distance from the machine.
  • Keep Away from the rotary elements and from the machine all the time the engine is running, the PTO is engaged and the rotors are running.

Lights And Indications:-

  • Before transporting the machine on public roads, ensure that all legally required lights and indicates are in place. Ensure that lights and indicators are clean and in a good working order. Replace any missing or broken equipment.

Daily our Every 10 hours work:-

  • Tighten all bolts and nuts.
  • Check the level of gear oil.
  • Grease rotor bearing & PTO shaft.

Weekly or Every 50 Hours Work:-

  • Tighten all bolts and nuts.
  • Check the level of gear oil.
  • Grease rotor bearing & PTO shaft.

Every 400 hours work:-

  • Periodically change the gear oil and use recommended oil only.
